First and foremost you should secure a fishing license before delving into the technicalities. Even if you want to become an amateur fisherman you need to get hold of basic pieces of fishing equipment to make your journey into the fishing world more exciting. Only basic common sense is required in order to match the right rod and reel to the fishing technique and know the line type. A more enjoyable and comfortable fishing experience is guaranteed if you are able to match these tools appropriately. You will often find your reel turning into a bird’s nest, and there are several reasons for this. But as even experienced fishermen have to encounter this, every now and then, there is no need to worry.

Your main objective should be to match the lure, the line, the reel and the rod. You will have to shell out around $25 to $ 40 for them and they will last for a long long time. While shopping for a rod, you should keep 3 issues in mind. Go for guides that are attached to the rod. The rod is held by grip or handle and is available in either foam or cork. Different lengths are available to provide comfort to the users. A reel seat where the reel is connected is the third equipment to be bought.

A lot of fishing rods are available at the dealers that could, when assembled, consist of two or more pieces or be a single piece. It is very easy to make the connection. You only need to connect the female and male ends together and line up the guides without fail. It won’t last beyond a few minutes. There are times when you also need a lubricant. You should slightly bend the rod to get the feel of it, while shopping for a rod. Also keep in mind the comfort factor of the equipment that you will use.

Any type of rod will work. A 6′ feet long rod of medium weight or even a long stick will do. In order to ensure that it doesn’t break easily, it should be flexible, straight and long. Graphite is the most popular rod as it is so strong and yet light. For conditions like long casts in moderate winds, wispy rods up to 4 m in length are ideal.

You can choose from a variety of fishing lines and it can be pretty confusing to select the best among them. The commonest ingredients are nylon and ‘monofilament’ that is available in spools of varying length. The latter is called Test. The size of the fishing line depends on the thickness of its diameter. Search for a 4 lb. or 4 lb piece. It should be almost 10′ long so as to be compatible with the basic rig.

Therefore the bottom-line is that all the gears should match with each other. Now for a synopsis of what other stuff your fishing kit should also consist of. It should ideally include fishing hat, sunglasses, and a pail of bait, first aid box, fishing knife, line clippers, and stringer, net. And of course snacks to keep you going. So don’t forget them.

The Shimano Compre has a series of fishing rods that serve as flagship rods within the entire group of rods from the maker. These rods provide you high value for your money that you cannot get from other brands of rods within the market of fishing necessities. The Shimano rods, especially the Compre group, are crafted using high-caliber materials. What is more, these rods feature the groundbreaking concept system of Fuji Guide. The rods of Shimano are easily distinguishable through their excellent finish. Each detail is given careful attention, including the gold inserts and butt caps of the Shimano rods.

Opt for Top Quality Shimano Compre Rods

The Shimano Compre rods are specifically designed to weigh relatively lesser than the rods of other manufacturers. These rods are lightweight and highly responsive to even the slightest tug of a catch. The sensitivity of the rods from Shimano comes from using IM8 graphite. If you want to fish for bass, trout, or bluegill, you can opt for a Compre rod. This is something that you should definitely have if you want to make saltwater fishing more enjoyable and fruitful. A Shimano Compre rod is one of the leading varieties of fishing rods in the industry. The cost for this brand of fishing is equivalent to its fine quality.

The Wonderful Features of the Shimano Compre Rods

Shimano is receiving a lot of positive nods from expert anglers and fishermen from different parts of the globe. This is because of the beautiful finish of the Shimano Compre rods. The previous versions of the Shimano rods have a maroon finish. The newer versions are given a black finish, which looks better than the former. What is more, the new versions of Shimano rods for the Compre series are added with Fuji concept guide. This guide system makes your cast more effective. It also makes your fishing line remain parallel with the rod. Since the rod is constructed with IM-8 graphite, you will immediately feel the tug of the fish that got hooked. Shimano Compre rods have spinning models that have blanks that are exposed on their fore grip. The Shimano baitcasters have similar exposed blanks located in the trigger’s front to provide more sensitivity.

The comprehensive list of attributes that you can find on a Shimano Compre rod includes the following:

 High quality IM-8 Graphite Design
 New Fuji Hardloy Concept Guide
 Exposed Blanks on the trigger or fore grip for some models of Shimano rods
 Handles that are made from Level-A cork
 Convenient keeper for the hook, which is found along the rod’s side
 Wrapped guides that are made from Gudebrod thread for more strength
 A butt cap, which is made from lightweight cork

Giving the Fishermen What They Want

There are some anglers who want to see exposed blanks along the rear grip of Shimano Compre rods. For fishing lovers who are just starting out, this kind of fishing rod might prove to be costly. But if you want to get the best deal, the rods of Shimano are perfect.

When you want to buy a Shimano Compre rod, there is a one-stop store that you can visit. This is the Sea Isle Tackle, which also provides different fishing equipments from different makers.

The fishing rod is the first basic piece of tackle the average bass fisherman needs to consider. I recommend a medium or medium light action graphite spinning rod. I advise buying a rod six foot long. This rod can be used in a variety of different fishing conditions. As you become more experienced you will see the need for more specialized rods at times. I have always used Berkley or Fenwick rods and found them to always be up to the task at hand. You should purchase your rod and reel simultaneously. I advise mounting the reel on the rod and holding it before you make a choice. The rod and reel combo should feel right. Hold the rod direct above where the reel is seated. If you point the rod perpendicular to your body it should balance in a straight line. If it does not the reel may be too big or heavy and need to be replaced with a lighter one.

Your next consideration is the reel. For the average fisherman I recommend an open faced spinning reel. The key here is to match the reel to the line you will be using. I like a reel that holds approximately 150 yards of 8 lb fishing line. I also like a reel with an excellent drag system. You have two choices regarding drag. I prefer reels that have a drag in the back of the reel. For me these drags are easier to adjust. Other people prefer the drag to be in the front of the reel on top of the spool. I consider this a matter of personal preference. Try both and go with what feels best to you. When you purchase a reel you will see a term gear ratio. They affect the power of the reel. The higher the gear ratio the more line that will be retrieved by each 360 degree turn of the handle.

For line I recommend monofilament line with a test of 8-12 lb. This is as close to an all purpose line that you can get. Again as you become more experienced you will see the need for lighter and heavier lines. I use Berkley Trilene line but have tried all the major brands and found them to be good. They key is to match your line to the reel you have chosen. I like to keep 150 yards of line on my reel. If your reel holds 150 yards of 10 lb line then I advise using that weight. You should always keep an extra spool of line on hand. You should also constantly check your line for nicks and other imperfections that can cause a fish to be lost.

The variety of fishing gear is endless. Dozens of reels to crank when the clerk isn’t looking and dozens of rods to twitch without hitting another customer.

Here’s what I do: before I go into the sport shop I decide what I am going after. And I do just that. But, aside, I usually end up with cans of to-die-for pretzels and elk jerky, too.

Picking the right reel for the job is easy if you know what fish species you’ll be going after. I’m lucky, I use the same rod and reels for bass, walleye and yellow perch.

I prefer a spinning reel over the baitcaster. That’s what I grew up with and that’s what feels best in my hand. I also like the control it gives me when casting and fighting a fish.

Most freshwater fishing is easily done with a spinning reel but what about size? How big or small of a reel should I purchase for my next trip to Lake Erie?

Reel manufactures like to assign numbers to their products. The number usually denotes its size. The larger the number, the larger the reel.

Look for reels with numbers such as 200, or 2000, 2500 or 3000 (my choice). These reels are prime sizes for most river and lake fishing. Larger reels such as 4000, 4500 or 5000 usually denote saltwater reels, made for 8, 9-foot rods for surf or pier fishing.

There is one exception to this rule, I’ve found. And that’s the size of the fisherman who will be using the reel. A large man with big hands might think a 2500 Shimano is too small to operate. Then obviously go with a larger reel.

Price-wise, it’s a jungle out there. Reels can cost anywhere from $10 up to $600. I’ve never owned a $600 reel and probably won’t. I tend to stick in the $60-$120 range.

When you pick up a reel read the information on the box. It will tell you a lot about what’s inside. Reels with more stainless steel ball bearings will likely last longer, but cost more.

But price and longivity go hand in hand. Buy a $60 reel and you might have to purchase one every two years. Buy a $120 reel and it might last four years. In the long run, the cost is the same.

Generally, spool your reels with 8-12-pound test line.

Now that you’ve decided on a reel let’s stroll over to the rod rack. It’s here that I spent the most money. I want strength, sensitivity, light weight feel, quality guides, a real cork handle and a reel seat that won’t cut into my hand. Keep this in mind and you will choose wisely.

Some manufacturers still offer fiberglass rods, but most turn out varying grades made of graphite and other binding materials. Why graphite? It’s strong, light and sensitive. Take care and it will last 5-10 years.

Choosing the length of the rod is pretty much subjective. Some anglers like a shorter stick, while others want more tip to fight their fish. If you can afford it buy both and you’ll know soon enough what’s right for you.

As I indicated earlier, I am sold on the smaller reel such as a 2000 Diawa or 2500 Shimano spinning reel. This size is perfect for a 6-foot or 6′6″ rod.

Unless you are sold on a custom built fishing rod, stick with well known companies like Berkley, Fenwick, Zebco and Shakespeare. Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s also offer some good stuff under their name.

As with reels, the more you spend the better the equipment. It’s up to the individual to decide what’s best for his/her budget.

Under the weight of a fish, A good rod should always have a gentle curve from near the handle to the tip. This means the weight is being distributed equally up and down the shaft.

So, when I go shopping I take along a one-pound weight tied to some fishing line with a snap swivel on the other end. When trying out a rod, snap the weight on to the tip’s eye then lift slowly and observe the curve. If there isn’t any, the rod is too stiff. If the rod tip goes to the floor, the rod is too limp. You want something in between.

All rods are marked as to their strength. Look just above the handle and you will find some writing. Letter “M” mean a medium rod; “MH” means medium-heavy; “L” light. You get the idea.

Remember, though, a Zebco medium probably won’t be the same as a Berkley medium. Check it out.

We recommend the following lures, Bass Bandit, Sidewinder, Skaliwags Mackerel Stripe and the famous Dexter Wedge. They can all be found in our extensive lures section.

I really do love to go fishing. I do not get to go as often as I would like but I go often enough to be a experienced fisherman. It is too bad that we all do not have more time to just go out and fish from the shore or in a boat more often. In life we do have things that we have to do such as work and that comes first before pleasure.

If you are new to fishing and you go into a bait and tackle shop or any store that sells poles, bait and tackle you may be confused as soon as you see the hundreds of rods all over the place. Some stores like BASS PRO offer so much selection is it insane. You may be wondering just how can you pick out a good rod out of all these rods.

I want to offer a few tips on picking out a rod that is right for you.

Set your budget. How much are you willing to spend on a quality fishing pole? Do not be too cheap here as that can backfire. Buying a cheap pole can mean you could lose the fish of a lifetime or have to replace your pole often as the cheap poles are not strong and break easily. When you walk into a store to buy a fishing pole they will have fishing poles in all prices and actions.

You first need to determine just what you are fishing for. What do you want or plan to catch? There are several classes of poles ranging from ultra light duty to heavy action. If you are trout fishing for instance you will most likely want a ultra light action pole. You could also use a light action pole too.

If you are looking to fish for small to medium sized fish you will enjoy a light action pole. These poles are not too long and and are very light. They are easy to hold up for hours because they do not weigh much. I found this out when I recently got one myself and compared to my heavy action pole it is amazing just how light it is. It is perfect if you are aiming to catch small fish. The line ratings on this class is 2-6 pounds and that is really all these poles can handle. I caught a few 3 and 4 pound bass on mine and the little thing struggles.

If you are fishing for bass you will want medium to heavy or just heavy action poles. I have and use both. I got a heavy action pole not too long ago and I like it. The only thing is it does not break down in the middle and so does not work good for transporting it around in a car. It is perfect for bass because it is ridged and strong enough to pull them in. I could easily pull in a 30 pound fish with this action of pole.

Throughout the evolution of mankind, there are not many things that have remained still facing thousands of years, which have stubbornly refused to change and morph into something else. One of these few things is fishing, an aspect so familiar and common that it is often disregarded by such categorizations. What started off as a means of food providing has become over the centuries one of the world’s favorite pastimes, attracting people of any age and from any corners of the planet.

Fishing is a very ancient practice that dates back at least to the Mesolithic period which began about 10,000 years ago. Archaeological features such as shell middens, discarded fish bones and cave paintings show that sea foods were important for survival and consumed in significant quantities. During this period, most people lived a hunter-gather lifestyle and were, of necessity, constantly on the move. However, where there are early examples of permanent settlements (though not necessarily permanently occupied), that are almost always associated with fishing as a major source of food. The Neolithic culture and technology spread worldwide between 4,000 and 8,000 years ago. With the new technologies of farming and pottery came basic forms of all the main fishing methods that are still used today.

In addition, fishing has always been a part of our evolving process, helping our ancestors survive through harsh times and feed their families, thus playing a crucial role in what we are today. Surprisingly or not, the industrial boom in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries has not managed to shake fishing from the place it occupies in our conscience. So what is it about this practice that makes us enjoy and feel drawn to it even in the twenty-first century, an era of absolute “laziness”, where we can eat fish just by buying it from a local grocery shop?

Scientists believe that we feel the urge to relate to nature, to feel free in it, and that our instincts pull us into trying to communicate with nature once more. And what better way to do this than by going on a fishing trip? Another similar theory tries to demonstrate that man continuously searches to reassure himself that he is in control of nature, and that nature is merely a means, an ally into man’s fight for survival. Clearly the two theories are bold and innovational but do make sense and explain many aspects of the matter, gaining more and more adepts worldwide.

The skeptics however, think that it’s nothing more than an exaggeration and that fishing in the present day has nothing to do with its meaning in the past. They claim that it’s only practiced for relaxation and that people have finally managed to find the entertaining aspect of fishing. To some extent, this theory could seem more “down to earth” but it also raises some questions. Why haven’t we found modern means of relaxation? Why are we keen on keeping alive a practice of thousands of years? Can it only be our need to relax in a natural décor from time to time?

As it is the case with all of mankind’s mysteries, the truth refuses to come out, come clean with us, and it is probably somewhere in between. What we know for sure is that we love fishing and that it has always played an important role in our becoming. Who cares about the reasons? Let that to the scientists’ concern, grab your angling rod and enjoy fishing.

I have always had the passion for the sport of fishing since I was a kid, not only is fishing a great hobby, but it can be down right therapeutic at times. Think about it, the peaceful and calm waters out on the lake along with all the quiet time to think. I have had plenty of days or times in my life that it seemed that nothing was going right but when I would go fishing, it always made me feel better without even knowing it.

Fishing is also a great way to bring family and friends closer together, just ask someone to go fishing and you will see what I mean. You can go fishing with anyone; you’ll be surprised as to the things that come up in conversation.

One nice thing about fishing is that it doesn’t cost a lot to get started. All you have to do is get a fishing license, a rod and reel, fishing line, hooks, bobber and bait, which can all be purchased a store like Wal-Mart. In a short matter of time you will have all you need to get started. I remember buying my own first rod and reel, that same day I was on a shore of lake fishing with my brother.

This is a hobby that you can also take to a whole other level. Some may go fishing once and decide that it’s not for them or like me, go out and buy a boat, with seven different fishing poles, a bunch of fishing gear and become a Bass hunter. Which ever one does, I guarantee that it will be worth the time to a least try fishing.

If you are looking for a new hobby that will put you in touch with yourself and those that you love, fishing is one way that will bring you joy.

As a Bass Fishing Beginner, I almost gave up on the sport of Bass

Fishing due my lack of knowledge and frustration. Now I enjoy sharing my experiences

with those who love to bass fish.
